Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee (R) is projected to win his third contest of the day in Alabama, a state with 48 delegates.
If Huckabee receives 50 percent or more of statewide vote, he would take all of Alabama’s at-large delegates. Otherwise, at-large delegates in Alabama will be allocated proportionally. The same formula applies in the state’s seven congressional districts. The winner of each district captures all of its delegates if he collects more than 50 percent of the vote. In the absence of a majority winner, the delegates of each district are apportioned based on each candidate’s proportion of the vote.
Huckabee scored the first victory of the day by carrying West Virginia’s early caucus on a second ballot. The first round of voting in the Mountain State failed to produce a winner but eliminated Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas). In the second round, McCain supporters flocked to Huckabee giving him a victory with 51.5 percent of the vote. Romney finished second with 47 percent but failed to collect any delegates.
