Rep. Wolf says he strongly backs McCain

Rep. Frank Wolf (R-Va.) moved Thursday to proclaim his strong support of Sen. John McCain’s (R-Ariz.) campaign for the presidency.

Rep. Frank Wolf (R-Va.) moved Thursday to proclaim his strong support of Sen. John McCain’s (R-Ariz.) campaign for the presidency.

His swift action contradicted his staff, who had said the congressman had not endorsed McCain even though the Arizona senator is the only Republican contender and is certain of the party’s nomination.

The Hill included Wolf in a list of names, published in Thursday’s newspaper, of 14 congressional Republicans who have not endorsed or publicly backed McCain.

Wolf, whose staff had distanced him from McCain and who failed to respond to two follow-up requests for further information, said he strongly supported the candidate and that his staff’s suggestion otherwise was “an honest mistake.”
