John McCain does not have a recurrence of skin cancer, according to a statement from his campaign.

The Republican presidential candidate told reporters Monday that his dermatologist removed a small piece of skin from his cheek to be biopsied. His campaign released a statement Tuesday night from Mayo Clinic spokesperson Michael Yardley on the results of that test.

"Sen. McCain visited the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Ariz., yesterday for a routine check of his dermatological health. The biopsy that was performed did not show any evidence of skin cancer. No further treatment is necessary,” Yardley said.

Campaigning in California on Monday, the Arizona senator told reporters: “I, as I do every three months, visited my dermatologist this morning. She said that I was doing fine, took a small little nick from my cheek, as she does regularly, and that will be biopsied, just to make sure that everything is fine.”

McCain was treated for malignant melanoma in August 2000. He has been cancer-free since then but gets checkups regularly.
